He is an airline and military pilot who became an inventor.

Passionate about the skies, he tried everything: hang gliding, paragliding, skydiving, sky-surfing, microlight, but his quest for freedom remained unfulfilled. He wanted to recapture the flight sensations of his military career on the Hawker Hunter and Mirage III. It was when he took up skydiving and wingsuit flying that a new dream opened up to him: to fly with as few constraints as possible.

With these experiences, the Swiss pilot was left wanting more: “it is very brief and only allows you to go in a single direction”. He then decided to find a way to fly like a bird. Through trial and error and continuous refinement of his invention, Yves eventually developed a wearable wing that allows him to fly using his body movements.

After 15 prototypes and 25 years of development

He achieved a functional version: a rigid wing with a 2.5 m wingspan, equipped with jet engines and powered by kerosene. In 2004, in Yverdon, it marked a major victory: his flight attempt was a success. In 2006, he enhanced his invention by adding two additional thrusters, enabling him to climb and achieve total freedom in the air. Since then, the man nicknamed Jetman, the flying man, Rocketman, or Fusionman has completed over 1,500 flights. A true birdman, Yves Rossy is capable of flying at astonishing speeds exceeding 300 km/h.

2008 was a landmark year:

• In May, he completed his first official flight over the Swiss Alps in front of an astonished audience.
• Then, in April, his wings were showcased at the 35th Geneva Inventions Exhibition.
• Finally, on September 26 at 2:19 PM, Yves Rossy accomplished a historic feat: using his invention, he successfully completed the crossing of the English Channel, 99 years after Louis Blériot. This achievement was broadcast in 165 countries and made headlines worldwide!

Always on the lookout for new challenges

The Swiss aviator subsequently flew over the Grand Canyon in 2011. More recently, Yves turned toward the future of his invention, looking for successors. In 2014, he brought Vince Reffet and Fred Fugen, world skydiving champions and base-jumpers, into a new adventure: flying in formation with an Airbus A380 over Dubai. Today, Yves Rossy is confident about the next generation and shares his extraordinary journey with audiences worldwide.
