Harvard Law School), and Professor of Swiss and International Tax Law at the University of Geneva since 1994. He is also Director of the LLM Tax program at the University of Geneva and a member of the Federal Commission for the Harmonization of Direct Taxes of the Confederation, Cantons, and Municipalities (CHID).
Following his Bachelor's and Doctorate in Law at the University of Geneva, he completed advanced legal studies at Harvard Law School in 1992.
He also practices as an attorney registered with the Geneva Bar (since 1987) at the law firm Oberson Abels SA in Geneva, Lausanne, Neuchâtel, and Sion, a firm specializing in tax and commercial law. In this capacity, he advises both individual and corporate clients on a full range of tax issues.
He recently took an active part in preparing the Corporate Tax Reform III. In 2016, he began investigating the legal and fiscal issues surrounding the taxation of robots and their activities. Within this context, he delivered the opening lecture of the Spring 2017 semester at the University of Geneva. Several academic studies on this subject have been published or are forthcoming.
He chairs the Tax Law Day (Journée de droit fiscal), which he has organized annually since 2000 in conjunction with the Ordre Romand des Experts Fiscaux diplômés (OREF), where he is an honorary member. He is the founder and director of the LL.M Tax (Master of Advanced Studies) launched at the University of Geneva in 2011.
Professor Oberson is actively involved in various associations, expert committees, and foundations in the field of tax law. In this capacity, he is frequently called upon to draft legal opinions, participate in tax reforms, or contribute to parliamentary proceedings. In May 2019, he joined the Tax Committee of the TIAETL (The International Academy of Estate and Trust Law).
He has held various public offices, notably as a judge on the former Federal Tax Appeals Commission (from 1994 to 2009) and as chairman of the Federal Commission of Experts on "Rechtsformneutrale Unternehmensbesteuerung". He was a member of the "International Tax Cooperation" expert group established by the Federal Council in March 2009 and took part in negotiations for a new double taxation treaty with the United States. Since 2010, he has served on the Federal Commission for the Harmonization of Direct Taxes (CHID).
In 2012, he received the "STEP Private Client Awards, The Geoffrey Shindler Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Profession".
Passionate about music, he is President of the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation and a member of the Foundation Board of the Montreux Jazz Festival.
