Over time, it became challenging for him to combine his studies, cycling, and participating in international competitions. In 1995, with his parents' support, he moved to Spain. Following two months of brilliant results in the amateur ranks, he finished as the top Spanish rider in his very first selection for the World Championships.

After another season in Spain and a further selection for the World Championships in Lugano, he turned professional in 1997 and enjoyed a ten-year career with teams including Polti, Saeco, and Cofidis. He notably competed in three Tours de France, seven Vueltas, and one Giro.

In 2006, he concluded his cycling career to transition into sales and customer service as an insurance consultant at Generali, which later entrusted him with the role of Head of the Lutry agency.

In parallel, he became a consultant for the Tour de Suisse on RTS in 2007.

He subsequently took up running, and in 2012, set the unofficial record for former cyclists over 42.195 km. He was also the top Swiss finisher at the New York City Marathon in 2013 and 2015.

Also active in politics, Daniel Atienza served as a municipal councilor in Moudon for two and a half terms.Language spoken by the speaker
